Come and listen to Aaron Cooper talk about his year racing on the highly competitive Figaro Circuit.

The talk is about Aaron’s season spent out in France racing on the single handed Figaro circuit as part of the Artemis Offshore Academy. He will explain about the boat and the style racing and how it differs to anything in the UK at the moment, which will include videos and pictures from his racing and campaign.

Aaron grew up sailing dinghies on a local pond and moved up into yacht racing on the Solent with the Bear of Britain and British Keelboat Academy. Last year he was selected to join the Artemis Offshore Academy to take on the new challenge on solo offshore racing in the competitive French Figaro circuit. He is now hoping to find sponsorship to get on the start line of the Solitaire du Figaro, to compete in the month long gruelling solo event.

The unpredictable British Summer greeted the fleet of 25 moths for the 3rd in the Noble Insurance Grand Prix open meeting series at Stokes Bay Sailing Club over the weekend of 15th/16th June. Wind gusts of up top 40 knot meant the first day had to be postponed allowing competitors to get last minute measurements and boat preparation for the next day and the up and coming Nationals.

The forecast was much more favourable for the Sunday and with a prompt start the fleet got on the water to a moderate SW with the hope of putting in as many races as possible.

Mike Lennon was quick to establish a big lead after going left up the first beat and sailing round the rest of the fleet with Ricky Tagg second. This left some of the locals in the middle to fight their way back up. But Chris Rashley and Jason Belben finally came through to take 2nd and 3rd from Mike.

There was no mistakes from Chris in the second race as a pin end start heading left took him to the mark first. A battle then ensued with Mike but with a dying wind Chris gained victory. The wind slowly disappeared making it non foilable and time for lunch.

The promise of further racing looked slim and several competitors started to call it a day. However the weekend was to spring more surprises when a good SE came in allowing the fleet to get back on the water. This produced the best races of the weekend with a close tack in shore giving great spectator views.

The change in conditions didn’t change the pecking order and Rashley dominated the final two races with Mike and Jason changing 2nd and 3rd’s.

Despite a poor forecast the weekend produced some good racing leaving the fleet contemplating what they needed to do to beat the dominant Rashers at next week’s Nationals.

Thanks to SailTek for awarding Ronstan prizes, Dan Vincent for his unique Saturday evening quiz and Kev Ellway for designing the quickest Moths on the track (all of the first three boats) and coming 8th himself.

Overall

1st Chris Rashley
2nd Mike Lennon
3rd Jason Belben

40 Musto sailors, 7 of them from stokes entered the nationals held over 4 days at Highcliffe Sailing Club.

Unfortunately Thursday and Saturday’s racing was cancelled due to big wind and big waves. As an result the event was reduced to 7 races, 4 on Friday and the remaining 3 on Sunday.

After the first days racing Bruce had scored 3 1st’s and a 2nd giving him the lead. Dan Henderson 2nd, Andy Rice 6th, Tom Wright 8th, Rich Pelley 9th and Gav brewer and Edd Wilkinson just outside the top ten. The racing took place in 7-14 knots and great waves.

Sunday saw lighter breeze with good results from Tom wright promoting him to 3rd overall. Dan tried to match race Bruce at the start of each race to good effect, but Bruce pulled through the final races to take the championship with dan coming in second. This put stokes bay members 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall, an excellent effort indeed.

The SBSC Velo Intermediate Group joined 1300 other cyclists to take part in this Sundays British Heart Foundation Cycle Ride.

Setting off from Stokes Bay the route took them across to Portsmouth via the Gosport Ferry, through Old Portsmouth and Southsea, where they had an early lunch stop, across the Hayling Ferry then up the Hayling Billy Trail Havant. From here it was a long steady climb up Portsdown Hill with the reward of an ice cream stop at the top, then a tea break a little further on, before hurtling down Portsdown Hill and into Fareham.

The final bit of the route crossed the Withies before heading to Stubbington, then home along Lee on Solent seafront, retruning jst in time for last orders at the Club Bar. The weather was good and we all had a great ride.

Is it two miles or is it two and a half, you decide? Our fun night handicap is open to teams of three people. Your team must stick together. You can start whenever you want – the winners will be the team that finishes closest to the finish time below. You can run fast, run slow, walk, hop or skip – it is all about knowing the distance and your team pace or in other words how fast you will complete the course. The team finishing closest to 19.45 (7.45pm) is the winning team. See e-mail for route & The Rules!

On 22nd June, the Stokes Bay Velo long ride group will have their first “away” fixture.

On 22nd June, the Stokes Bay Velo long ride group will have their first “away” fixture. The venue will be the Meon Valley with a rendezvous at the George and Falcon pub at Warnford for a 2+ hour circular ride over Old Winchester Hill, Beacon Hill, Butser, Harting, Stoner Hill and any others that take our fancy. Then return to the RV and take refreshment and maybe a cream tea.

Meet time 1400 at the George and Falcon pub (RV in the rear car park, over the bridge)

If you are interested, please send an e-mail to tom.nelson5@googlemail.com so I can organise crowd control measures on the climbs and at the RV.
