BURNS NIGHT 2011

Some thoughts on Burns Night:

Ode to a Burns Night (Stokes Bay Style)
We honuory Scots each year will meet
And eat and toast the bard.
We listen to pipes, wear the plaid and raise a glass of malt.
This far South we like to enjoy the annual cull of the haggis
But the event is clouded in ancient traditions
That only now can we divulge.

The Haggis is hunted with great care and nestled in the ovens warm embrace
It submits to its fate with grace except for one who fights and makes a bid for freedom
(William Wallace was its name)
But the English fought to tame the beast and back in the oven it did leap.
With peace to the kitchen restored and Haggis roasting silently
Tatties and neaps are prepared with military precision
An army of helpers with peelers and knives assembly for their orders
And with a cry of ‘Onward peel’
The second phase commences
Tatties peeled and neaps cut up
The pans are gently simmering
A peace descends and the army sigh
Ready before the last push!

As the revellers gather and malt is sipped
The piper calls for order
With pride the Haggis is paraded round
And addressed in a language we cannot fathom
But we laugh and applaud as if we know
Exactly what the poem means.
With eagerness the food is dished and eaten with gusto
Another year, another Haggis
And a room of satisfied people
We extend the invite to all next year
You’re welcome to indulge in Haggis!
